Compress a photo under 100 KB or 200 KB for upload
Portals reject oversized photos when the file exceeds a hard KB limit. Export a smaller JPG (and resize dimensions if needed) until the file is under the stated cap — often 100 KB or 200 KB.
Direct meaning of “photo too large”
“Too large” almost always means file size in kilobytes, not how big the subject looks. A 12 MP phone JPG can be 2–4 MB. Many forms still want:
| Cap | Common on |
|---|---|
| 50–100 KB | Older government / exam portals |
| 200 KB | Application and HR forms |
| 500 KB–2 MB | Newer portals and email-adjacent uploads |
Read the exact number on the form. Guessing wrong wastes attempts.
A reliable order of operations
- Confirm format — JPG is usually safest; convert HEIC first.
- Resize dimensions — passport and ID photos rarely need 4000 px width.
- Compress — lower JPG quality until under the KB cap.
- Re-check — open the file properties; do not trust the camera roll thumbnail size.
Why quality looks “ruined”
If you only slam quality to 10% on a full-resolution phone photo, faces smear and backgrounds band. Better path:
- Resize to the portal’s max dimension (or a sensible 800–1600 px longest side for form portraits).
- Then compress to meet the KB limit.
Checklist before you re-upload
- Extension is
.jpg/.jpegif required - File size is under the stated KB limit (not equal to a “maximum” that the validator treats as exclusive)
- Subject still recognizable at the portal’s preview size
- You kept the original, uncompressed file
This clinic does not process images. When you need a local compressor aimed at 100 KB targets, use the Fernpix link below.
FAQ
Why do portals still use 100 KB limits?
Many legacy form systems and shared hosting quotas were built when camera files were smaller. The limit is often outdated, but it is still enforced.
Does lowering quality always get me under 100 KB?
Not always. A huge pixel canvas can stay large even at low quality. Resize the longest side first, then compress.
Is 200 KB different from 100 KB?
Same process, different target. Aim just under the portal’s stated number and keep a copy of the original.
