Portal says JPG only — PNG, WEBP, or HEIC rejected

Published 2026-09-30 · Last reviewed 2026-09-30

Direct answer

“JPG only” means the validator accepts JPEG files and blocks other formats. Export or convert to a .jpg / .jpeg file before uploading — PNG, WEBP, HEIC, and PDF are common rejects.

What “JPG only” is checking

Upload fields often use a simple allow-list:

  • Allowed: image/jpeg, extensions .jpg / .jpeg
  • Blocked: HEIC, PNG, WEBP, GIF, BMP, TIFF, PDF, DOC

Some portals accept PNG as well. Trust the form text, not a general web article.

Formats that commonly fail

You upload Typical result
HEIC from iPhone Invalid / unsupported type
PNG with transparency Rejected or flattened badly later
WEBP from modern exports Unsupported on older servers
PDF of a scan Wrong document type for a “photo” field
Screenshot PNG Size + format double failure

How to produce a safe JPG

  1. Open the original in a converter or editor.
  2. Export JPEG / JPG.
  3. If the portal also has a KB limit, compress after export.
  4. Do not wrap the photo in a PDF unless the field explicitly asks for PDF.

Progressive vs baseline JPEG

A few older systems dislike progressive JPEGs. If a JPG still fails with a vague error:

  • Re-export as a baseline JPEG
  • Strip odd color profiles if your tool offers “sRGB”
  • Avoid embedding huge metadata if the tool allows a slim export

Still stuck after a valid JPG? The next suspects are file size and dimensions, not the word “JPG” itself.

FAQ

Is JPEG different from JPG?

No meaningful difference for portals. .jpg and .jpeg are the same format family.

Why did my PNG fail if it is an image?

Many validators only whitelist JPEG. Transparent PNGs and large PNGs are especially common rejects.

Can I rename .png to .jpg?

No. Renaming does not convert the file. The MIME type and bytes still look like PNG and will fail stricter checks.
